Intro to Kayak Fishing
9/26/2006 7:00 PM
Location: REI Houston - Willowbrook
Contact: Customer Service, (832) 237-8833
Kayak fishing is rapidly gaining popularity, especially here in Texas. Let REI introduce you to fun and effective ways to fish either saltwater or freshwater. Let us show you how to choose the right boat to attract the attention of the biggest great white shark in the ocean or the largest gator on the lake! The adrenaline is great for those shorts bursts of speed required to “plane” your boat and outrun whatever you have managed to bait. OK, seriously, we will discuss choosing a kayak, essential gear, safety, basic boat rigging ideas, and local kayak fishing groups.
Guadalupe River Announcement
The Guadalupe River is in drought condition flow levels. Please limit fishing to warm water specicies in the trophey trout section. The low flows and warm water temperatures are putting severe stress on the trout population. - Guadalupe River Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Beach Fishing Access Threatened
The natural pass that cuts lower West Galveston Island and Follett's Island is currently
protected by the Texas Open Beaches Act. This essentially designates the area as public
property, a rarity in Texas.
Erosion in the area threatens some of the beach houses in the area. A bill authored by
State Sen. Kyle Janek, R-Houst and State Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, would turn this
beach into private property in order to create a man-made bulkhead.
This bill would establish a legal precedent exempting other beaches from the Texas Open
Beaches Act; thereby threatening all of the beaches in Texas.
While protecting the property sounds reasonable, it is really taking the beaches away from
the citizens and reducing public access. The risk of erosion is supposed to be assumed by
those who would build houses along this natural treasure.
If you would like to voice your concern over this, make a call to
Senator Janek - (800) 445-2635 and Representative Bonnen - (512) 463-0564
